BANBURY United’s Emirates FA Cup run came to an end when they fell to a shock 3-2 home defeat against Shildon.

The County Durham side, who play two tiers below the Puritans in Division 1 of the Ebac Northern League, came from behind to deny Mike Ford’s side a place in the fourth qualifying round.

Banbury’s Tom Winters saw his cross land on the top of Shildon goalkeeper Nick Liversedge’s net early on.

And at the other end, Dan Moore fired wide, before Adam Burnicle forced Puritans stopper Jack Harding into action.

Luke Carnell saw his header cleared off the line for Banbury, before they took the lead on 29 minutes.

Liversedge failed to clear a Jefferson Louis cross and Winters pounced to drive home.

Their lead only lasted three minutes, though, Burnicle firing past Harding.

Both sides had chances to lead at half-time.

Louis mis-controlled when through on goal for Banbury, while Burnicle lobbed Harding but saw his effort go wide.

Puritans defender Carnell went close again after the break, forcing Liversedge to tip over the bar, before Louis headed straight at the goalkeeper.

But it was Shildon who found the net on 57 minutes, when Dan Moore headed home.

They then extended their lead as Burnicle fired into the corner.

Banbury rallied and Winters saw a deflected shot cleared off the line. They gave themselves hope with eight minutes to go, when Ricky Johnson headed home.

And the Puritans saw another shot hacked off the line as they went in search of an equaliser, but it was not to be.
