ARDLEY United have been rocked by the resignations of chairman Norman Stacey and manager Paul Davis.

Davis, who was in the role for 18 months, led the club to fifth place in last season’s Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division as well as winning the Supplementary Cup.

But it is Stacey’s decision to step down that will leave a huge void.

The 74-year-old has been at the helm for more than three decades, but believes it is the right moment to move aside.

“It is with some regret that after 35 years as chairman of Ardley United FC I feel it is now the time given my approaching 75th birthday and some family health problems to call it a day,” he said.

“I have seen this little village club climb from the Lord Jersey League through the Oxfordshire Senior League and into the Premier of the Uhlsport Hellenic League, a journey which has been fraught with highs and lows along the way but one that has provided me with much pride and pleasure.

“I set myself two goals - to win the Hellenic Premier League title and to lift the Oxfordshire Senior Cup.

“The second we achieved three years ago, but the Hellenic title has eluded me, coming second to Wantage Town by one point and missing promotion to the Southern League.

“My thanks go to all those hundreds of players that have passed through the club, the many managers and assistants who have given their time and experience, the hard working committees, the three leagues that have provided us with competitive football over the years, and the Oxfordshire Football Association for their continued support."

Ardley are now looking for a new man at the helm.

“The club must continue and we are actively seeking a replacement chairman,” he added.

“If you feel you are the one to take over please get in touch, and we can offer a smooth and gentle take over.

“I will not be disappearing as I intend to buy an anorak and spend my Saturdays visiting the many clubs that I have grown to know and respect.”

Davis thanked Stacey for his support during his time at the club.

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions during my tenure, but one I’ve thoroughly enjoyed," he said.

“I would like to thank all the supporters, sponsors, players and staff, but most of all chairman Norman Stacey for the outstanding support he has shown me in my time at the club.

“Personal reasons dictate it is time for me to step down now, but to finish the season in fifth place and to collect a trophy at the end of a long season are memories that I will never forget.”
