DIDCOT Town are to appeal to the FA against having to replay their controversial match against Hereford last month which was abandoned because of crowd trouble, writes Michael Knox.

The referee halted the Evo-Stik Southern League contest on March 4 after fans invaded the pitch in the 88th minute, while celebrating the visitors taking a 2-1 lead.

The league have directed the clubs to replay the Division 1 South & West game.

Didcot chairman John Bailey said: “I know the league are abiding by their rules, but in this instance we don’t think that it’s sensible to play the game.”

According to league rules, the replay will be treated as a cup game, with hosts Didcot bearing the brunt of the match expenses.

“It's not just that. The ill-feeling generated from the first game should also be considered. We just don't want the hassle of another match.

“There is no need for a replay. Hereford are already champions, and we are safe in mid-table.

“We’ve contacted Hereford, who agree with our stance.

“If the FA turn down our appeal, we will play the game behind closed doors if they allow us.”

Didcot expect to hear by the end of this week the result of their appeal.

In the meantime, the Railwaymen will not challenge the heavy suspensions dished out to defender Sam Elkins and coach Sam Parish.

Elkins was handed a five-match ban for his part in the fracas.

The 27-year-old was found guilty of improper and/or violent conduct by an FA panel and will miss the rest of the season.

Parish was suspended for four matches after being found guilty of the same charge.

Bailey said: “We were surprised at the length of the suspensions, but because their incidents involved fans, we have to accept them.”

The FA had already confirmed that neither club will face any further action

Didcot player-manager Ballard said: “The length of time sorting out the issue hasn’t been great, but we now need to move on.

“Sam (Elkins) has been magnificent for us this season.

“It’s a real shame to lose him, but he’s taken responsibility and accepted his punishment.”
