A DELIGHTED Stuart Cattell hailed his players after Wantage Town’s place in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West was secured for another year.

The Alfredians finish their season away to Tiverton Town tomorrow, but know they cannot be relegated following Burnham’s 2-1 defeat by Didcot Town on Tuesday.

For defender Cattell, who took over as player-manager in November, clinching survival is one of his greatest moments in the game.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and I rank it up there with winning the league,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed some great moments with this club, winning the Hellenic League twice, so it felt right to stay and help them keep that Southern League place.

“It’s been a tough season, but ultimately it’s been a success.”

Midfielder Gio Wrona misses the season finale with suspected scarlet fever and left back Cameron McNeil is unavailable, paving the way for teenagers Harry Broad, Harry Whitehead, Jack Heggie and Harry Denton.

Once the campaign is over, Cattell expects a decision to be made on his own future.

He said: “I’ll have a talk with the chairman and then we can start to look forward to next season.

“I’d like to be a part of it moving forward, but obviously it has to be right for the chairman and the board and everyone else at the club.”
