Kidlington reached the quarter-finals of the FA Vase for the first time with a memorable 2-1 victory away to Cleethorpes Town on Saturday.

The Greens had to weather a full-blown blizzard before making history.

The visitors were quickly out of the blocks against their opponents from the Northern Counties East League, taking the lead after only seven minutes.

Tommy Castle was set free on the left by Jack Quainton and ran on to shoot powerfully past the keeper.

A dramatic goalline clearance by Henry Owen from Marc Cooper enabled Kidlington to maintain their lead, while Cleethorpes were also unlucky when Luke Mascall’s shot cannoned off the inside of Sam Warrell’s post.

Just before half-time, Kidlington doubled the lead when Lewis Coyle took possession of a throw-in, turned and beat two defenders before shooting brilliantly home.

Playing into the strengthening wind in the second half, Kidlington conceded a goal when a misjudgement by Chris Weedon saw Brody Robertson burst through to score.

Martin Wilkinson’s side battened down the hatches, and despite losing Ben Weedon with a hamstring injury, held on to reach today's draw.

l Thame United, who played the last half-hour with ten men, came from behind to win 3-2 at Ardley United in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division.

Elias Katsoludi gave Ardley an early lead, but they were hit by an injury to Ade Talabi and conceded three goals before the break to Andy Gledhill, Dan West and Ellis Hercules.

After Thame’s Aiden Bailey was sent off, Ardley managed to add only a further goal by Katsoludi.

Abingdon United lost 5-1 at home to Thatcham Town, their only goal coming through Ryan Jackson Wild.

Letcombe slipped out of the Blue Finn Sports Supplementary Cup when they lost 2-1 at home to Wokingham & Emmbrook, Richie Claydon netting their only goal late on.
