Didcot Town’s Emirates FA Cup adventure may be over, but chairman John Bailey is hoping the club will reap the benefits for years to come.

The run came to an end with a 3-0 first-round defeat at home to Exeter City in front of a full house and a live TV audience on Sunday, but Didcot’s exploits this season are expected to have netted them around £100,000.

It’s a huge windfall for the Railwaymen, who have struggled financially in recent years.

Bailey said: “We’ve not got a big budget – we had to cut it about three years ago.

“Ian (Concannon) and Jamie (Heapy) have done fantastically well with the budget they’ve got and they’ve brought together a great group of local players.

“They’re two very popular managers, but we can’t offer players the finances that maybe other clubs can.”

Money is less of a problem now, following a run which brought in almost £30,000 in prize winnings, as well as the proceeds from television.

But Didcot, who are without a league game tomorrow, won’t be spending their new fortune on a host of big-name signings.

Bailey wants to use it to nurture the next generation of home-grown talent.

“With the money that we’ve generated, we hope to improve facilities for training, so that we can bring on the young lads,” he said.

“It’s not going into people’s pockets or into the players budget.

“We’re hoping that this will be a legacy for the players coming through.”
