Wantage Town confirmed themselves clear from relegation danger in Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West with a valuable goalless draw at Sholing Sports on Saturday.

The visitors, who missed a second-half penalty, are now six points clear of second-to-bottom Bishops Cleeve with two games to play – and a goal difference advantage of 33.

With new signing Adam Bruce making his Wantage debut, both sides struggled with the swirling wind and the hard pitch.

Goal chances were at a premium, especially in a tame first half.

Both keepers had quiet games, with only Sholing’s Rory Anderson being called into action in the 70th minute.

Nick Thorne was brought down in the box, and Ben Whitehead stepped up to take the penalty, but Anderson saved it comfortably.

But Wantage did enough to stay up.
