BANBURY United fans have announced plans for a takeover of the struggling Evo-Stik Southern League club.

More than 100 supporters attended a Banbury United Supporters’ Club meeting at Spencer Stadium on Monday to elect a seven-strong board of directors to carry out the day-to-day running of the club.

With assistance from national organisation Supporters Direct, the supporters’ club hope to transform the Puritans into a Community Benefit Society, and complete the purchase by mid-June.

They say they already have plans to raise funds for the club via a community share scheme.

Additionally, they have received a pledge of money to refurbish the clubhouse and a five-figure sponsorship deal has been agreed for next season.

Supporters’ club chairman Stephen Barlow has been staggered by the support they have received from the local community.

He said: “By the number of people who’ve come along to this meeting and the universal support we’ve received from fans, you can really see that everyone is enthused by this scheme.”

Meanwhile, manager Paul Davis said his side remain fully focused on achieving the unlikely feat of avoiding relegation.

Banbury travel to relegated Burnham tomorrow looking for a first league win in six games and Davis said his players are confident ahead of a busy Easter weekend.

“They’ve never stopped believing,” he said.
