A SCOTLAND football player has been charged by police following an alleged incident involving a taxi.

Hibs striker Garry O'Connor, 20, is alleged to have driven his Honda car into the back of a taxi on Saturday morning, before leaving the scene on foot.

Lothian and Borders police are understood to have questioned the player soon after the 5am crash in Newington Road, Edinburgh.

It is believed the taxi driver involved in the accident reported the player to police.

The (pounds) 1m-rated player, from Port Seton, near the capital, has been charged by police with careless driving, failing to report an accident and failing to stop after an accident, a police spokesman confirmed.

The spokesman added: ''A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.''

O'Connor, who has played twice for Scotland, was named in the Scotland Under-21 squad yesterday.
