Banbury United stayed at the foot of the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division despite a battling display in 1 2-1 defeat against play-off chasers Truro City at Spencer Stadium on Saturday.

The Puritans’ fifth league defeat in a row sees them eight points from safety.

Truro started the stronger and almost went in front when Shane Kra’s 25-yard effort fizzed wide.

So it was against the run of play that Banbury took a 15th-minute lead.

Joel Meade fastened onto a free-kick from Thomas Amegnaglo before finding Kynan Isaac, who took the ball past two defenders and squared it for Tom Ryan to knock in from close range.

However, Truro equalised three minutes later when Shane White hooked Danny Greenslade’s over-hit cross to Les Afful, who chested the ball past Leigh Bedwell in the Banbury goal from five yards.

Bedwell was called into action ten minutes before the break, diving low to his right to keep out Matthew Wright’s well-struck shot.

Truro took the lead in the 59th minute when Wright headed White’s cross back across Bedwell into the far top corner of the net.

Banbury attempted to get back into the contest, but did not test Kyle Moore in the Truro goal as the hosts stayed bottom of the pile.

Banbury Utd: Bedwell, Walcott, Martin, Meade, Tappin (Westbrook 80), Ryan, Green (Howards 64), Amegnaglo, Lewis, Isaac, Browne (Hartigan HT). Subs not used: Cray, D Martin.
