Wantage Tn 0
Clevedon Tn (Barton og 2, Sims 8, Adams 60) 3

Wantage Town’s woes near the bottom of Division 1 South & West increased with a morale-sapping defeat against their fellow strugglers on Saturday.

The hosts were looking to build on their midweek win against Cinderford, which gave boss Daniel Barry his first victory since he took over in October.

However, their hopes suffered a rude awakening when Clevedon took the lead in the second minute through an own goal.

Striker Ben Bament whipped in a cross which Andy Barton could only divert into his own net as he tried to clear.

And it got worse for Wantage six minutes later when Clevedon doubled the lead.

Omari Sims charged forward before unleashing a shot that appeared to be going wide, only for the ball to hit a divot before finding the bottom right hand corner of Gareth Tucker’s net.

Wantage had a chance to cut the deficit two minutes before half-time when substitute Jared Johns saw his shot parried by Kane Mannings in the Clevedon goal, only for Sam Barder to fire the rebound into the side-netting.

Clevedon sealed victory on the hour mark.

Sims went on a great run before playing in Jamie Adams, who rounded Tucker before slotting into the empty net.

Wantage tried to get back in the game, but their only real effort on target came when Shaw saw his well-struck shot comfortably saved by the keeper.

The scoreline would have been more comprehensive were it not for a string of fine saves from Tucker.

Wantage Tn: Tucker, Glover, Hubert-Thomas, Cattell, Warne, Jones, Barder, Barton (Johns 28), Janes, Lovegrove (Shaw 60), Thorne (Reid 60). Subs not used: White, Reid, Roberts.

Attendance: 65.
