Oxford City general manager Justin Merritt said he never stopped believing they could claim a result against Woking on Saturday – even when they found themselves 2-0 down 20 minutes from time, writes Matthew Bruce.

And he felt that City’s remarkable comeback, thanks to goals from Greg Pearson and Declan Benjamin was richly deserved.

“You always keep playing and I’m delighted with the lads,” said Merritt.

“It just shows good character and we’ve got a great team spirit.

“We’re a newly-formed team and they can gain confidence from that.

“It was one of those where they had a great chance to score a third and the lad at the far post should probably have scored, which would have been the match dead and buried.

“When he missed that we actually said ‘if we nick one here, you never know’ and that’s what happened.

“They’re a good side, Woking, they’re a top-six Conference team and you can see that in their players.

“We’ve matched them for large parts of the game, so we’ve got to take that and be happy with it.”
