Banbury United failed to build on an early lead as they lost to a late winner in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division on Saturday.

The result saw the Puritans stay three points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Weymouth started the stronger with a Chris Shephard shot from just inside the penalty area rattling the bar with Leigh Bedwell in the Banbury goal beaten.

So it was against the run of play when the visitors went ahead.

Marvin Martin broke down the left before his low cross was bundled home by Ben Whitehead from close range.

The hosts tried to get back in the game, but were repelled by stout defending.

However, two minutes before the break a mistake at the back saw Adam Kelly fire past Bedwell.

Weymouth kept up their dominance in the second half and went ahead.

Bedwell parried Jake Wannell’s header onto the bar, only for substitute George Rigg to put away the rebound.

Banbury responded positively and equalised in the 76th minute when substitute Leam Howards’s cutback found Carl Tappin who found the top corner.

And with three minutes left, Banbury looked to have earned a point, but Stewart Yetton’s late winner to denied them.

Banbury Utd: Bedwell, Cray (White 51), Martin, Meade, Tappin, Ryan, Walcott, Westbrook, Talabi, Hayden (Howards 66), Whitehead, Subs not used: Green, Hartigan, Smith.

Attendance: 602.
