Wantage Town ended a run of five Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West games without a win by recording their biggest victory of the season at fellow strugglers Bashley - 6-1.

The visitors, with defender Ben Brown making an impressive debut on loan from Oxford City, fell behind after 12 minutes when Clive Makoni cut in from the left before firing home.

But Wantage were far from disheartened and Danny Lachacz equalised four minutes later after breaking onto a long ball before shooting home.

Amazingly, Wantage made it two goals in a minute when a cross beat everyone but Xapi Arnau at the back post, and he headed home.

Lachacz grabbed his second in the 36th minute, finishing tidily after Jimmy Deabill had flicked on.

And before Bashley had time to draw breath, they had been hit by a double whammy for a second time as Wantage skipper Tom Melledew drove home from the edge of the box.

Wantage were on fire, and on the stroke of half-time Deabill rounded the keeper for his ninth goal of the season to make it 5-1.

George Reid replaced Jack Smith as a precaution at half-time for Wantage, who continued where they had left off.

Arnau linked up well with Lachacz and thumped home Wantage’s sixth goal on 47 minutes.

That was the end of the scoring, but Wantage could reflect on a job well done.
