Paul Davis says he is well aware of the huge job he faces as Banbury United’s interim manager.

Davis has been handed the hot-seat after the resignation of Edwin Stein this week.

Banbury are rooted to the foot of the Southern League Premier Division table after losing their opening six matches this season.

Davis has been given the chance to turn their fortunes around and is relishing the opportunity, although is fully aware of the tough job ahead.

“The results speak volumes and clearly people are down at the moment,” he said.

“Quite often a new manager brings a new lease of life to a club, and hopefully that will be the case here.”

Davis is working quickly to bring in new faces, with goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell the first to join.

“I’ll be honest and say that some of the players here aren’t good enough,” he said.

“There are more than 40 signed on and I will say to them all that they are welcome to come training and prove to me they should be involved.

“If they want to leave because of the change, that’s up to them.

“But I will have six or seven new faces at training and it could be a very different-looking squad.”

Of the arrival of Benwell, who had a loan spell at Banbury last year, Davis commented: “Lee hasn’t been playing much, but I have no doubt that in 18 months or so he will be picked up by a League club because he’s that good a young keeper.

“We have to start by not conceding goals because if you do that, you’ll get at least a point every match.”

Davis would like the job on a permanent basis, but knows that he must get his side climbing the table.

“Football is a result-driven industry, we all know that,” he said.

“But I am not signing players for just one or two matches. My intentions are to carry on for quite a while here.”

Banbury chairman, Kim Dumbleton, said: “We are all hoping that things will start to turn, and I am confident they will.”
