FOOTBALL: North Leigh's play-off hopes are over
8:50am Monday 21st April 2014 in Non League
NORTH Leigh’s play-off hopes are over after a disappointing home defeat against lowly Clevedon on Saturday.
A late penalty miss from Stuart Hole capped a miserable afternoon for the Millers, who now know that they must spend another season in Division 1 South & West of the Calor League.
After the previous week’s 7-0 thrashing of Guildford City when smart crisp attacks were rewarded with goals, on this day nothing went right.
Despite overwhelming superiority in terms of possession, creativity and attacks, the hosts were denied by Clevedon keeper James Dunn, the woodwork and some off-target strikes.
The only goal of the game came from a second-half penalty awarded against Millers stand-in keeper Kane Lewis, who brought down Clevedon striker Joe Swift on a rare attack on the Millers goal.
The first half was all one-way traffic as North Leigh streamed forward.
Elliott Osborne-Ricketts’s clever shot with the outside of his left foot struck the bar, while Conor McDonagh saw his effort smothered by the keeper Clevedon defended well and bravely in a goalless first half.
The second periodstarted in the same vein. A deep cross from Michael Hopkins from wide on the right found Hole in the clear, but he blazed over.
The goal came in the 57th minute. Clevedon substitute Isaac Reid played the ball through to Joe Swift in the box.
Swift was fouled by Lewis, who was booked, before Kye Mountford made no mistake with the resultant spot-kick.
The Millers threw everything into attack.
A stunning 82nd-minute effortfrom Mark Bell saw Dunn somehow tip his shot around a post.
In the 89th minute, Clevedon’s Adi Harvey palmed away a corner off the head of Hole.
Hole took the subsequent penalty, but fired it inches wide of the left-hand post.
North Leigh: Lewis, Hole, Hopkins, Turk, Gunn (Else 75), Caton, Bell, Osborne-Ricketts, McDonagh (Walcott 75), Wood-ley, Williams (Sanders 62) Subs not used: Malone, Westlake.
