FOOTBALL: Wantage's title quest suffers a jolt

Wantage Town’s Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division title hope suffered a blow as they went down to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Flackwell Heath.

The result means that Wantage stay a point behind Ardley United, though they have a game in hand on Kevin Brock’s table-toppers, who were in cup action.

Wantage, who gave Anaclet Odhiambo his debut, started strongly, with Ben McCready seeing his 25-yard shot rebound off the bar.

Mark James had a goal chalked off, while Tom Melledew and Tom Butler had shots saved.

Wantage continued to press in the second half, but they failed to take their chances.

And they paid the price five minutes from time when Stuart Glynn fired in the winner after a mistake byWantage keeper Gareth Tucker.

The visitors had a chance to level late-on, but Steve Davis’s header whistled wide.

Louis Joyce bagged a four-timer as Oxford City Nomads crushed Newbury 9-1 at Marsh Lane.

John Rixon netted a double, with Mark Janes, Adam Morris and Dan Leggett completing the rout.

Newbury replied via an own goal.

Kidlington moved to sixth with a 3-1 win at home to Cheltenham Saracens.

Lewis Coyle put the hosts ahead with a penalty after Danny Mason was brought down.

Michael Duerden doubled their lead from Danny Bone’s pass, before Tom Castle’s close-range finish sealed it.

Although Declan Chick hit back for Cheltenham, it was too late.

Milton United maintained their Division 1 East title push with a 3-0 win at Finchampstead.

Harry Dalton bagged a brace, with Dan Cox-Rogers also on target.

AFC Hinksey’s faltering bid continued in a 2-0 loss at Wokingham & Embrook, Jake Butler and Elliot Rushforth the scorers.

Lee Newport scored a 26th-minute winner as Didcot Town Res defeated Penn & Tylers Green 1-0 at home.

Chinnor beat Burnham 2-1 at home, thanks to a seven-minute double from Jack Wright. Joe Lloyd replied.

Goals from Louis Howell and Graham Sims sealed a 2-1 home win for Henley Town against Woodley Town. James Pheby replied.

Former Letcombe player Adam Pendell hit the winner for Clanfield in a 1-0 home success against his old club in Division 1 West.

James Washington’s brace was in vain as Old Woodstock Town crashed 7-3 at Lydney Town.

Max Roberts got their other goal, with Richard Keir (3), Jarred Liddington (2), Matt Timmins and Dan Morgan on target for the home side.

Carterton lost 4-1 at Tuffley Rovers whose scorers were Shayne Bradley (2), Jordan Fletcher and Elliot King. James Harris replied for Carterton.

Peter Moulder scored an 80th-minute equaliser as Easington Sports drew 1-1 at Hook Norton.

Craig Robinson had put the hosts ahead on 22 minutes.
