Abingdon United striker Callum Wilkinson scored a hat-trick on his debut, but still finished on the losing side as visitors Wantage Town won 5-3 in the quarter-finals of the Uhlsport Hellenic League Bluefin Cup on Saturday.
A double from Wilkinson, both from close range, put the home side seemingly in control, only for the visitors to hit back forvictory.
Three minutes before half time, Robbie Sadler clawed one back from long-range.
But it was all Wantage after the break with Tom Melledew levelling on 51 minutes.
Wantage went ahead when Sadler’s shot deflected in off Cameron McNeil past a helpless Chris Rackley in the Abingdon goal.
Shawn Webb swivelled to volley in for 4-2 after good work from Jimmy Deabill, before Sam Barder smashed in No 5 on his debut from a Deabill knock down.
Wilkinson had time to complete his hat-trick when his shot was deflected into the net, but it was too little, too late.
