Banbury Utd 0

Weymouth 0

Banbury United were held to a goalless draw at home in a wind-affected Calor League Premier Division clash on Saturday.

The first real chance came Weymouth’s way in the 16th minute.

A stray Banbury free-kick deep inside their own half by debutant goalkeeper Dean Snedker was played forward to Stewart Yetton, but the Weymouth striker could only lob the ball on to the roof of the net with the keeper beaten.

Three minutes later, a Banbury corner taken by Scott Bridges saw shots from inside the penalty area by Adeyinka Talabi and Leon Simpson well blocked by defenders.

In the 33rd minute, Jason Matthews was equal to a well-hit 30-yard strike from Kyal McNulty.

Chances were few and far between, and it was the 58th minute before there was another decent opening.

A Weymouth corner from the right was met by the head of Michael Walker.

The ball looked destined for the back of the net, but Snedker deflected the shot on to the bar, with Simpson then hacking clear.

Weymouth were looking the better side, but Banbury held firm and on 75 minutes they almost broke the deadlock when a corner was knocked out to Talabi, whose fierce shot from a narrow angle was well held by the keeper.

Three minutes later, Banbury went close again. A quick break from a Weymouth attack saw McNulty pick out Kynan Isaac midway inside the Weymouth half.

He exchanged passes with Albi Skendi before his cross from the left was met at the near post by the head of Talabi.

The ball appeared to be going into the top left-hand corner, but Matthews brought off a superb acrobatic save to palm the ball over.

Banbury Utd: Snedker, Cray, Martin, Isaac, Simpson, Mbamarah, Morgan (Lawless 86), Bridges, Skendi, McNulty, Talabi. Subs not used: Sharpe, Pinto, Dias.
