FOOTBALL: Bridges is spot-on
11:00am Monday 28th October 2013 in Non League
Scott Bridges bagged a brace as Banbury United moved up to seventh in the Calor League Premier Division after a thrilling late 3-2 victory at Bashley on Saturday.
With the sides level and the game in stoppage time, a draw looked likely, only for Bridges’ last-gasp penalty to win it for the Puritans.
Banbury started strongly, only for Jack Satterley to fire the hosts ahead after a counter-attack.
But the hosts levelled when Dominic Lawless’s low cross found Anderson Pinto who fired past Nic Jones in the Bashley goal from six yards at the far post.
Leigh Bedwell then tipped away Satterley’s long-range shot to keep Banbury level.
After the break, Wayne Blossom’s header was tipped around a post by Jones before Banbury took the lead.
Bridges got on to the end of a long clearance and smashed the ball home from 12 yards past Jones.
Bashley had posed little threat, but equalised when Jack Odam headed home.
Banbury pushed for a winner and three minutes into injury time got the decisive goal.
Bridges was fouled just inside the area and he picked himself up to convert the resulting spot-kick.
Banbury Utd: Bedwell, Cray, Martin, Bridges, Blossom, Kisitu, Abrahams, Dumbleton (King 62), Lawless, Isaac, Pinto. Subs not used: McNulty, Westwood, Green, Ryan.
