FOOTBALL: Elkins enjoying his Didcot role

Caretaker boss Gary Elkins, who takes charge of Didcot Town’s first qualifying round trip to Windsor tomorrow, has indicated he would like the job on a permanent basis.

The former Swindon, Fulham and Wimbledon defender was one of a three-man team put in charge of the Evo-Stik Southern League side following the sudden resignation of manager Dave Mudge last week.

Elkins, plus assistants Richard Peirson and Ian Concannon, were given three gamesto see if the new system worked.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Cirencester Town on Saturdayin Division 1 South & West, was followed by a 2-2 draw at home to Wimborne on Tuesday night.

So the decision will have to be made after the tie with financially troubled Windsor, who now play in the Combined Counties League.

“Although I was disappointed we didn’t beat Wimborne, I’ve really enjoyed doing the job,” said Elkins.

“I feel it could work, so early next week I will meet chairman John Bailey to discuss the the matter.”

Although Didcot will be strong favourites at Windsor, their opponents will be up for the game, as it’s one of the few chances the club has to make some money.

“It’s a big game for us also,” said Elkins, who names an unchanged squad, defender Chris Owens having signed, as expected, for Uxbridge.

Didcot Tn (v Windsor, away): from Belloli, Heapy, Stanley, Henderson, Noble, Thomas, L Williams, Elkins, Tappin, Bowles, Clark, Haysham, Osborne-Rick-etts, M Williams.

North Leigh , who are second in Division 1 South & West, are at home to Wantage Town, the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division leaders. Wantage will be missing skipper Tom Malthouse.

Meanwhile, Abingdon United are at home to Wimborne in a re-aranged Division 1 South & West match tomorrow, after both sides had been eliminated in the preliminary round of the FA Cup .
