CHRIS Wilder expr-essed his anger at Oxford United’s performance after they crashed out of the FA Cup at Sheffield United on Saturday.

Although the U’s were not fancied to beat their opponents from a division higher, it was the manner of their loss than left Wilder fuming.

Trailing 2-0 after 19 minutes, Oxford were on the back foot from the off and ended up on the end of a 3-0 reverse.

Despite being backed by around 2,300 vociferous supporters, the U’s were unable to create many opportunities, and never looked like getting anything out of the game.

“We didn’t do any of the aspects of football you need to do to win a game,” a downcast Wilder said afterwards.

“We didn’t compete, they worked harder, they won more races, more tackles – everything.

“Apart from a ten-minute spell just after half-time, I have got no positive feelings towards the performance at all – apart from we have been backed magnificently by around 2,500 supporters who never stopped singing.

“I’ve told the players in no uncertain terms that they didn’t deserve the support they got today.”

Wilder, who was returning to his hometown club, said that the manner of the performance was right up there with the worst since he came to the club almost three years ago.

“In my time here we have had bad days – matches where we haven’t played great, people have missed chances or the goalkeeper has dropped one, like Wembley.

“But we always compete – that’s standard for me to ask the players to do that, but we didn’t today.

“And I can’t really remember that being the case in many – if any – other matches since I have been here.

“We just wanted to be a fanny side that wanted to play nice bits and pieces and not do the other side of it that wins you football matches.

“I am a massively disappointed manager – and it’s not just because of where we lost, I’d have been the same at whatever ground today.”
