Oxford United goal king James Constable can’t wait to find out when his team will play Swindon.

The two clubs are arch rivals, but have not locked horns in league combat for a decade.

However, Swindon’s relegation from League One means they will meet again in the 2011-2012 campaign, and close-to-capacity crowds can be expected for the eagerly awaited clashes at the Kassam Stadium and the County Ground.

Born in Malmesbury, and having played for Malmesbury Youth and then Chippenham Town, Constable knows Wiltshire well and how strong the rivalry is between the two clubs.

And he says that will be the first game he will look out for when the 2011-12 fixtures are released.

He said: “As a lad growing up in that area, and knowing the rivalry, I think they’re going to be interesting games.

“Swindon will be disappointed with the season they’ve had, having been in the play-offs the season before, and then unfortunately getting relegated.

“They’re going to be a tough side to play against . . . I think all the teams coming down will be tough, as will the ones coming up from the Conference, so it’s going to make the league even stronger.”

United have a very poor record at Swindon, with only one victory at the County Ground in 25 attempts.

But Constable, 26, who has scored 69 goals in 127 starts for the U’s, has already produced one sensational performance on Swindon’s pitch.

He recalled: “When I was at Chippenham, we had a Wiltshire Shield match against Swindon at the County Ground – and I scored four!

“They had quite a strong team out, but I think, if I remember right, the game went to extra time and in the end we won 6-2.”

Beano added: “I’ve been told already by supporters that there haven’t been too many wins there. It will be nice to get that win that all Oxford fans want.

“It will be great to have a few more local derbies. It’s something that the lads enjoy, hopefully it will be trouble-free and a good game.”
