OXFORD City boss Mark Jones has set his players a new target now that they are safe from relegation.

Last week’s 2-1 victory against Eastbourne Borough has taken City 12 points clear of the drop zone in Vanarama National League South with five games to play.

“Although we are not mathematically safe, it would take a horrendous series of results for us to go down,” said Jones.

“We feel safe, but we are not going to down tools until the last ball is kicked.

“Last season, we came 14th with 52 points – it would be nice to beat that.

“We need three more wins and I think we are capable of that.”

Jones is happy with the campaign, considering the club’s financial problems – they are still servicing a large debt.

“With us reaching the second round of the FA Cup and finishing in mid-table, it’s been an OK season,” he said.

City should have played at Wealdstone on Wednesday night, but the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The new date is set to be Thursday, April 26.

“I was not at all happy about the postponement,” said Jones. “It now means we have to play four games in the last week of the season.”

Defender Eddie Jones would have served a one-match suspension in that game, but this is now carried over to their match at Weston-super-Mare tomorrow.

Godfrey Poku, fully recovered from a knee injury, is added to the squad that beat Eastbourne.

“I can’t remember us ever winning at Weston, so it would be nice to turn that form around,” added Jones.
