GINO van Kessel wants Oxford United to be the club where he finally settles after a nomadic start to this playing career.

The forward is looking to step up his playing time when Pep Clotet’s men visit Scunthorpe United on Saturday after making a perfect start to life in England last weekend.

Within three minutes of coming on as a substitute, he scored a spectacular goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Portsmouth.

Van Kessel joined on a season-long loan deal from Slavia Prague, but the clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £810,000 at the end of the campaign to turn it permanent if he impresses.

And after making 11 moves across six countries by the age of 24, Van Kessel is keen to stop travelling.

He said: “Hopefully I’m going to stay here – as a little boy you always dreamed of playing in England.

“League One isn’t the highest level, but the potential is here.

“I think we can for sure make it to the Championship next season, that’s one of the top five leagues in Europe.

“I’m really happy, the team has great guys who support me from day one.

“I’ve had a really warm welcome and I’m happy to be here.”

And the desire to put down roots is strengthened by the new arrival on the way.

He said: “In a month I’m going to be a father, so my wife is coming to join us and it would be great for us as a family to stay in one place for a long time.

“Everything has happened at the same time, but I’m excited to come to England because it’s not easy as a foreigner.

“Now I’ve finally done it and I’m happy with the decision.

“Hopefully I can stay here for the rest of my future.”

The Curacao international has been on Pep Clotet’s radar for a year, dating back to his time at Leeds United.

United’s boss is confident the summer signing has what it takes to turn his impressive debut into a successful campaign.

He said: “Gino can have a good season and add a lot of things to the team, but the team will add a lot of things to him.

“He will enjoy the English game because he’s the kind of player who can benefit from how the game is played here.”
