Aaron Martin is the only first-team player who could miss out from featuring for Oxford United as they visit Solihull Moors today.

Just nine weeks after wrapping up automatic promotion, Michael Appleton’s squad kick-off their pre-season schedule at the Vanarama National League North champions.

Following a week of training at Bisham Abbey, the central defender has a minor back problems which means he may not be risked.

Appleton said: “In the first couple of weeks of pre-season, every day I say to the players before we start – stay fit and keep fit.

“Pre-season is about getting through it without getting injured.”

United plan to play two different XIs for the game at Damson Park, so the rest of their summer signings – Simon Eastwood, Wes Thomas, Christian Ribeiro, Dan Crowley and Curtis Nelson – are all set to make their debuts.

Although United have done some tactical work this week on how they intend to play this season, the vast majority of the sessions so far have been on building up fitness.

It means to begin with Appleton has relatively low expectations.

He said: “We’re just trying to get the players in a frame of mind which is getting used to being competitive again.

“We have done a bit of functional work with the players over the last couple of days.”
