STRIKER Patrick Hoban admitted his dramatic late equaliser for Oxford United was all the sweeter because it came against Luton Town.

The substitute poached a 92nd-minute goal at Kenilworth Road, as the U’s came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Hoban was thrilled, particularly after having a winner wrongly ruled out when the sides drew 1-1 at the Kassam Stadium in February.

The Irishman said: “Maybe it makes it a little sweeter.

“I remember that day really well and I couldn’t believe it got called offside because it would’ve been three points.

“This was all about getting an important result, not to lose.

“Luton are going for promotion as well and I feel like there’s still a lot to come from us.”

Before coming on, the 24-year-old was on the end of criticism from one Luton supporter.

So after converting Johnny Mullins’s header to score, Hoban ran half the length of the pitch to make a point.

“I was getting a bit of abuse from one particular fan for no reason during my whole warm-up in the second half,” he said.

“I just told him ‘you’re going to regret that when I come on the pitch’ and everything just fell into place.

“I wasn’t letting him get away with it, no way with the abuse I was getting, so I just gave him a little ‘shush’ with the finger across my lips.”

The goal itself was scruffy, but the only thing the striker cared about was opening his account for the campaign, after scoring once in 20 appearances last season.

He said: “I just stayed in the six-yard box waiting for a knock-down.

“A goal is a goal, I don’t care how it goes in. Every striker will take 20 tap-ins a season it’s great to get a goal.

“It’s not nice being stuck on zero for a while, I know how that feels after last season, so it’s good to do it early.

“Hopefully I can push on and help the team.

“We got a result from it, so it means a lot.”
