Gary Ackling said that his departure as manager of Abingdon United had taken him by surprise.

Ackling, assistant Andy Lyne and coach Rob Wytchard have all parted company with the club – just a month after securing their Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division safety.

But a reduction in United’s playing budget for next season meant that the former Wantage Town trio agreed to cut short their stay at the club, seven months after taking over from Andy Zoldan.

Ackling said: “It was a surprise, because I had spoken to them after the season and we’d agreed a budget, but on Thursday I found out that wouldn’t be available after all.”

Now Abingdon are looking to appoint a local manager to work with their existing young prospects.
