Oxford University Press missed out on a treble after they were pipped to the Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division title on goal difference by Oakley United.

The Oxford side appeared to have put themselves in pole position for the title as they led the table by three points with two games left having played a game fewer than Oakley.

But a damaging midweek 1-0 defeat by Marston Saints saw them hand the initiative to Oakley, who beat Horspath 3-0, before taking the title with a 4-1 final-day win against Eynsham.

OUP were handed a walkover by Riverside as they finished level on points.

But the Buckinghamshire side won the crown for the second time in their history, having had a vastly superior goal difference.

Hosts Eynsham successfully frustrated Oakley in the first half, but were blown away after the break, thanks to strikes from Kevin Poole, Sean Coles, Tom Grant and Kieron Schmidt.

Jack Smith’s penalty for the home side was ultimately in vain.

OUP had collected their second trophy of the season with a 4-1 win over Eynsham in the final of the Oxfordshire Senior League’s Presidents Cup at Kidlington on Bank Holiday Monday.

Goals from Johnny Roberts, Sean Hurcombe, Jamie McCuaig and Chris Baker sealed victory for OUP.

Tom McCuddon replied for Eynsham from the penalty spot.

It followed their 4-1 Oxfordshire Charity Cup final victory against Horspath last month.

However, the treble proved a step too far.

Meanwhile, in other league matches, Josh Reilly hit a hat-trick as Adderbury Park crushed Marston Saints 6-1 away from home in the Premier Division.

There was also a double for Josh Bowden and a single for Kyle Forbes, while Ben Crawford netted Saints’ consolation.

Chalgrove came from behind to beat Freeland 2-1 at home.

James Turner gave the visitors an early lead after capitalising on an error by goalkeeper Sam Eeles, but Bertie Proctor dispatched a penalty to level the scores and Tim Cox bundled over for the winner.
