Commuters slithered to work in Glasgow today as the heavy snowfalls yesterday across the West of Scotland turned to ice.

Parts of Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire were still under thick snow today and temperatures plunging to below zero made roads icy and dangerous.

The good news on the weather front is that the cold snap ends today - the bad news is it will be wet and windy until next week.

Weather experts had little cheer for motorists and commuters when they faced a chilly start to the day in sub zero temperatures.

The mercury dropped to -1.5C (29F) in Glasgow overnight but forecaster Paul Mott of the MeteoGroup admitted: "It would have felt pretty cold because of yesterday's snow."

Police described early morning road conditions as "treacherous" and warned motorists to drive with extreme care.

One driver suffered a broken ankle when his car spun on black ice in Tarbet, Argyll around 5.30am.

Up to 10cms (4ins) of snow fell yesterday in areas around the city such as Ayrshire and Lanarkshire bringing with it early morning rush-hour chaos when blizzards swept Scotland's western coastline.

However, Mr Mott said: "The cold snap ends today.

"Temperatures in and around Glasgow will be around 6-7C (43F) which is slightly below the average of 8C (46F). But tomorrow will be a lot milder.

"The temperature during the day will be around 11C (51F) although it will be cloudy and quite windy with occasional rain.

"It will be wet and windy for the rest of the week and at the weekend."
