A BEAUTY salon that doubled as a bistro and shop in Glasgow's West End has suddenly shut - leaving 15 staff out of work.

The workers at Eden were told hastily at the end of their shift that they no longer had jobs.

The upmarket venture, in a former bank in Hyndland Road, was dubbed a one-stop lifestyle shop when it opened in January 2004 by Stuart Brown and Simon Green.

It was a salon with two beauty rooms, a hairdresser's and had a licensed restaurant selling food until 11pm.

The salon also offered wedding packages.

One worker who had been a hairdresser at Eden for two years said: "We went to work on the Saturday after Christmas and at the end of the day the owner told us he was closing the business.

"We were shocked. We had no notice and no redundancy payments or anything.

"Customers with appointments on the Monday and Tuesday were contacted, but others must have turned up to find the shop shut.

"I have found another job but others haven't."

A message on the firm's answering machine says: "We regret to inform you Eden has ceased trading. Further details will appear on our website."

The website says: "We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this has caused our customers and would like to thank you all for your custom in the past."

It says any gift vouchers bought will be honoured at Glasgow's other Aveda salon, James Dunn House, in Hanover Street, which is an unrelated business.

That salon confirmed it would accept the vouchers and a spokeswoman said it may also consider taking on some of Eden's former staff.
