THERE was a major security alert at the Great Yorkshire Show at

Harrogate yesterday shortly before Princess Alexandra arrived to

officially open the new #1.2m sheep building.

Bomb disposal experts were called in when a suspicious package was

found in the president's lounge, but it proved to be a hoax. As a

precaution, police had cleared a large area in the centre of the

showground.

Livestock interest centred on the judging of the inter-breed awards.

In the beef section the Charolais team triumphed, with the Simmentals

reserve, followed by the Aberdeen-Angus. A Suffolk shearling ram from

Jack Bulmer, Manor Farm, Malton, took the title in the terminal sire

competition, while a North Country Cheviot from Graham Lloyd,

Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, topped the hill breeds.
