BRITAIN staged a storming finish to the four-day European Youth

Olympic Games in Valkenswaard, Holland, by winning 10 medals -- two of

them gold -- to take their tally to 21.

There was some reward for a spirited athletics team weakened by

commitments to the English Schools Championship when James Archampong, a

17-year-old hurdler from Milford Haven in Wales, struck gold.

Archampong raced to victory in the 110 metres in a time of 13.92sec.

to put himself on the path previously trodden by his compatriot Colin

Jackson.

''Maybe not the next Olympics -- but for the ones after that I'll be

ready. Perhaps I'll even beat Colin one day,'' he said.

There was a bronze medal for 16-year-old 400m runner Mark Ponting,

from Cwmbran, who missed silver by just .01sec.

Edinburgh's Sinead Dudgeon, aged 17, added another bronze, in the 200m

with a time of 24.76, while Bearsden schoolboy Martin Pate cleared 1.95

to be eleventh in the high jump.

Britain's judo players also came good during the last day's finals

with Dunstable 16-year-old Duncan Kirby battling to gold in the 15kg

category. Ross Clark, 16, from Kent, and 14-year-old Surrey girl Karina

Bryant had to be content with silver in the 55 and 66kg categories

respectively.

There were two more silvers for British swimmers as well as two

bronzes. Lancashire's Tim Riley (100m back-stroke) and 12-year-old Leeds

girl Linda Hindmarsh (100m breast-stroke) gained silver while Surrey's

Margaretha Pedder landed bronze along with the girls' 4 x 100m medley

relay team. British swimmers won 12 medals in all.
