WRAPPED up yesterday was a double-decker-sized sandwich deal for a

Lanarkshire company, which will double both its turnover and workforce.

Green Meadow Foods, set up less than three years ago, has been

contracted to supply all the sandwiches Littlewoods Stores can sell in

their 13 Scottish stores.

Since that has been worth around #1m annually, it promises to give a

major boost to the local firm based in Motherwell Food Park. In fact,

its business will double and the current workforce of 17 is being

increased by a further 18 full-time staff to keep pace with anticipated

demand.

Added significance is given to the deal by the fact that it breaks a

traditional trading pattern, in that previously the major multiple

stores bought all the sandwiches for their Scottish outlets from

England.

The man who has achieved this breakthrough is Green Meadow founder and

managing director Alan Greenshields, whose home is in Coatbridge. With

an engineering background, he worked for the Marshall Food Group as

production manager at their Cambuslang plant before setting up on his

own.

From the outset, he concentrated on establishing a reputation for

quality and standards. Co-director Lesley McDougall is responsible for

processing. The company's client list already includes Intercity,

Compass and Glasgow Airport.

''It was important to us to source for our Scottish stores locally,''

commented Ruth Mansfield, a buyer for Littlewoods, who said that Green

Meadow had matched all their requirements.

Admitting that competition for the Littlewoods order had been tough,

Mr Greenshields disclosed that during the selection process they had to

undergo many rigorous inspections by the store group's technical team,

who demanded high standards of hygiene, quality and staff awareness.

''There are not any short cuts to success. It is what you put in as a

team effort that will bring the rewards,'' he said, paying tribute to

his staff and the ''invaluable assistance'' given by Lanarkshire

Development Agency and Motherwell Enterprise Development Company.
