OSTEOPATHY is now recognised as part of mainstream health care, and a
register of approved practitioners can be expected around summer next
year.
Meanwhile, the Osteopathic Information Service offers a 10-point
checklist to prevent pains in the back or neck:
* Don't sit hunched up, cradling a telephone on your shoulder.
* Don't put all you carry in one bag. Try spreading the load, or at
least changing hands from time to time.
* Don't sit with your legs crossed all day. It can twist the pelvis
and lead to varicose veins.
* Don't sit beside the air conditioning vent or a draughty window.
Keep a spare sweater handy to wrap around your shoulders.
* Don't suffer from over-long meetings. Make sure your chair gives
proper support. Even sitting down, you can flex your toes and calf
muscles; move about to prevent stiffness.
* Don't go for a so-called executive-style chair if it does not give
proper support. A secretarial chair may be far better.
* Don't keep twisting about, from telephone to word processor and back
again. Get a swivel chair -- or simply re-arrange your desk.
* Don't have a chair that is at the wrong height. Make sure you get a
comfortable position.
* Don't strain to life heavy files on to high shelves. Use steps.
* Don't lift and pull at the same time. Keep the back straight and
bend the knees.
