The Duke of Sutherland's statue is certainly not looked lovingly at by

the people of Sutherland but the monument is part of their heritage and

I do not believe that a majority would want it removed. It stands on a

landmark and as a reminder of the cruelties of the Highland Clearances.

There is, however, a need for some sort of memorial, possibly in the

form of a museum/visitor centre, to counter the view spread by the

Sutherland family that the Highland Clearances were really ''the

Improvements.''
