A LABOUR MP has called for an urgent meeting with a veterinary drugs

company over fears for the future of one of its Glasgow plants.

The workforce has been told Grampian Pharmaceuticals Ltd plans to

close Young's at Anderston over the next 12 months in order to increase

its competitiveness in the single European market, Mr George Galloway,

MP for Hillhead, said last night.

Young's employs 160 people in liquid manufacturing work. It is

understood the parent company in Bury St Edmunds wants to close its

Glasgow and Bury St Edmunds sites and to relocate some of the jobs to

Leyland in Lancashire.

''Orders for the Glasgow branch of the operation are high. Workers

have consistently been asked to put in overtime over the past year,'' Mr

Galloway said.

''They now face an uncertain future having only the vague offer of a

number of opportunities in England or the dole queue.''

He went on: ''The company will have to come across with some very good

explanation for the proposed move to England. With unemployment running

at its current level, the hopes for these workers will be virtually zero

if the closure is allowed to go through.''

No-one was available last night from Grampian Pharmaceuticals for

comment.
