MIKE Standly carded a best-of-the-day round of 67 at English Turn,

Louisiana, yesterday for an aggregate of 281 and a one-stroke win in the

New Orleans Classic.

But it was an exciting finale, with Payne Stewart and Russ Cochran

missing long birdie putts on the last green that would have earned them

a tie with the winner.

Standly's 67 allowed him to cancel his plans and gain a seat on the

players' plane to Augusta and the Masters.

The winner, co-runner-up with Greg Norman here last year, had the best

nine holes of the tournament yesterday, playing his front nine in 31

shots, and just 10 putts.

He stood up well to the pressure. After having opened a three-shot

lead by the eleventh hole, Standly had just two bad shots, both

resulting in bogey, but none of the other competitors mounted enough of

a challenge.

Stewart appeared to be out of the tournament following three bogeys

and three birdies on the front nine. Five shots behind Standly after the

turn, Stewart missed several short putts, but after the thirteenth hole,

the putts started dropping.

He made three birdies in four holes, and teed off on the eighteenth

one shot behind.

Norman birdied the fourth then made a 10-foot eagle putt on the par

five sixth. The Australian birdied the ninth from two feet to post a

nine-hole score of 32.

The edge of the hole got between Norman and birdie on several holes on

the back nine, making his first birdie on the par-five fifteenth after

having been the only player to reach the island green in two.

Norman fell from contention at last when he missed a

two-and-a-half-foot putt for par on the seventeenth.

Nick Faldo shot his best round at English Turn, a three-under-par 69.
