A 60-year-old man being driven home was shot dead by a gunman in an overtaking car yesterday after a 100mph chase between two cities.
The innocent backseat passenger was with three friends in a car leaving Nottingham after a night-out when they were followed by another vehicle.
They pulled away, setting off a high-speed, early-hours pursuit towards Leicester. As they slowed down near Leicester, the other car pulled alongside and a shot was fired, shattering the glass and hitting the man.
The driver of his car pulled into a nearby police station as the gunman's vehicle sped off. Officers ran out to help the injured man, but he was later confirmed dead.
The attack comes just over a week after Marian Bates was shot dead in a Nottingham jeweller's shop.
Police said they did not yet know the motive for the latest killing but believe it could have been a road rage attack, robbery or a case of mistaken identity.
The victim and his three friends had been out in Nottingham and were driving home to Leicester just before 3am when the incident happened. Detective Superintendent Martin Morrissey, of Leicestershire police, said: ''The offence indicates that the person is very dangerous and we will be doing everything we can to catch them.''
