POLICE last night stepped up their hunt for the hit and run driver who killed a 10-year-old boy yards from his home.

Officers investigating the death of Jack Anderson are examining hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, while colleagues made a painstaking search of drains around the car park at Saughton prison in Edinburgh where the killers abandoned a green Peugeot.

A team of officers is combing through CCTV footage from shops, businesses, garages and buses as well as street cameras that might help identify the three men who were in the car when the incident happened.

Police believe the drivers of a red hatchback and a lightcoloured car could also be key witnesses. The red car was in the north queue of traffic at the pelican crossing which Jack was crossing when he was hit.

The light-coloured saloontype car, which may have been a Fiat, was attempting to park at a nearby junction when the hit and run happened.

Police are trying to identify the chain of events that led up to Jack's death at around 3.20pm on Thursday afternoon and have appealed for witnesses to a variety of crimes which may give them clues to the identities of the men in the car.

They will start by investigating attempts by three men to con their way into people's homes in Dalkeith, Leith and Portobello earlier the same day.

Chief Inspector Euan Morrison, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "Closed circuit television is going to play a vital role in this complicated and detailed investigation. We already have numerous tapes from various premises which we are studying.

"Over the coming days we will be obtaining more coverage which we hope will not only lead us to identifying the three men but also allow us to piece together their movements from the first bogus caller job in Dalkeith through to Saughton Prison."
