MARK Cubitt, one of the directors at Babtie Group who reaped the rewards of its pounds-92m sale last year, has been named financial director of the year.

Cubitt, of Jacobs Babtie, took the private sector prize, while Brian Lawrie, head of finance and asset management at Fife Council, won the public sector award in the annual event staged by Bank of Scotland with support from ASA International and CA Magazine.

Cubitt, 41, joined Babtie from Dawson International in 2001.

Babtie's turnover has increased from pounds-120m to pounds-180m, debt and gearing have been cut back, and management profitability has trebled.

The judges included Archie Hunter, former head of KPMG in Scotland, Professor Neil Hood, emeritus professor of business policy at Strathclyde University, Ian Ritchie, chairman of the Interactive University, Ian Robertson, managing director of corporate banking at Bank of Scotland, and Isabelle Low, deputy chair of the Accounts Commission in Scotland.
