A former St Mirren footballer has been fined £400 after becoming abusive when police caught him urinating in the street after a night out to celebrate the club's Scottish Cup victory against Celtic.

Barry Lavety, who scored 72 goals in 191 appearances for the Paisley side, was relieving himself behind a lamppost when he was seen in the town at around 3am on Sunday, the day after their 1-0 win against the Old Firm side.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard the 34-year-old said "don't patronise me" when officers asked what he was doing. He reacted angrily when he was detained and led into a waiting patrol car and began shouting and swearing.

Defence lawyer Terry Gallanagh said his client had been at a nightclub in Paisley town centre and, on leaving the premises just after 3am, had been "caught short" and went behind a lamppost to relieve himself.

Lavety, who also played for Hibs and Clydebank, before retiring to teach sport to children, was told by Sheriff James Spy that he should be setting an example to young people when he appeared from custody to plead guilty to the offence and a charge of breach of the peace.

Lavety, from Erskine, was ordered to pay the fine at £10 per week.
