Landlords and ladies from Troon to Thurso are gearing up for another season of B&B breakfasts, all of which should (if they're worth their salt) finish up with the crunch and tang of toast and marmalade. Thank you, Mrs James Robertson, of Paisley, for turning your grocer husband's oranges into marmalade all those years ago - and let's not forget Mrs Keiller, of Dundee, Mrs Scott of Carluke and Mrs Baxter, of Speyside either.
Robertsons Dundee
75p for 340g (22p per 100g)
Mrs Robertson produced a jelly marmalade from sweet oranges - the classic Golden Shred. Robertson's Dundee is jelly-like, with more rind and a bitter tang, but not that orangey. Pleasant enough. Now made in Manchester (alas), with 25g of fruit per 100g and 63g of sugar per 100g.
Duerr's English Traditional
85p for 454g (18.5p per 100g)
Made from Seville oranges, this has a good citrus taste. Not much rind, but what there is is thick cut. Added caramel adds to the dark richness. Low fruit, but good value. Made in Manchester with 20g of fruit per 100g and 65g of sugar per 100g.
Robertsons Golden Shred Reserve
#1.09 for 340g (32p per 100g)
Another jelly marmalade with a nice amber colour, medium rind and sweetish, tangy citrus taste. The high fruit content requires refrigeration after opening. Made with 40g of fruit per 100g and 67g of sugar per 100g.
Frank Cooper's Original Oxford
#1.35 for 454g (29.5p per 100g)
Thick and solid with a very coarse-cut peel. Not that orangey but with a dark, rich Seville orange bitter-sweet taste, with added caramel colour. One to get your teeth into. Made by CPC, with 40g of fruit per 100g and 68g sugar per 100g.
Scotts Old Scottish
89p for 340g (26p per 100g)
A traditional Scottish, jelly-like marmalade. Sweet, not that orangey, and with small pieces of fruit. One for the sweet-toothed. Made by R&W Scott of Carluke, with 30g of fruit per 100g and 67g of sugar per 100g.
Chivers Olde English
89p for 454g (19.5p per 100g)
Rich dark flavour of Seville oranges and added caramel colour. Some rind and a bitter-sweet taste, but not that orangey. Reasonable fruit and good value. Made by Chivers Hartley, Cambridge, with 30g of fruit per 100g and 69g of sugar per 100g.
Baxter's Luxury
#1.19 for 340g (35p per 100g)
Thick-cut Seville oranges give a chewy, bitter-sweet marmalade with excellent taste and a fine amber colour. The high fruit content requires refrigeration after opening. Tasty, but not cheap. Made by Baxters of Speyside, with 35g of fruit per 100g and 63g of sugar per 100g.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
