Didcot Town boosted their Evo-Stik Soutehrn League Division 1 South & West play-off hopes with an easy 2-0 victory aagainst Clevedon at the Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium on Saturday.

A goal either side of half-time was enough for the Railwaymen to leapfrog Oxfordshire rivals North Leigh to sixth, though frustratingly they are still six points off fifth place with six games left.

There was little excite to Didcot’s lowest crowd of the season, with chances at a premium from either side.

However, the key moments of the game fell to the hosts and once they took the lead, they never looked like losing.

Didcot went ahead on the half-hour mark, thanks to some enterprising work from Jimmy Deabill.

The striker blocked Clevedon goalkeeper Kane Mannings’ attempted goal-kick, with the ball rebounding off him and into the back of the net for his second goal in his last two games.

Didcot’s top-scorer John Mills should have added to his tally just before half time when Mannings's, wayward kick went into the path of the striker, only for the former to put his shot wide of the open goal.

Didcot improved slightly in the second half and showed moments of good play.

And they doubled the lead just before the hour mark with a well-worked goal.

Substitute Josh Baines brought the ball forward and passed across to James Organ whose cross was met by Mills to head home, for Didcot’s second and his 44th of the season, 33 of which have come in the league.

Didcot continued to press to look for a third goal, but were unable to beat a stubborn Clevedon defence as they kept the pressure on the play-off sides.
