Adi Yussuf struck twice as Oxford City came from behind to beat derby rivals Brackley Town 2-1 in their Vanarama Conference North clash at Marsh Lane on Saturday, writes Matthew Bruce.

Shaun Jeffers put the visitors in front following a catastrophic goalkeeping error, but a double from leading scorer Yussuf handed City their first win in five attempts.

The visitors, who included ex-Oxford United trio Billy Turley, Eddie Odhiambo and Chris Carruthers in their starting XI, were also winless in five.

But they contained City well in the early stages, restricting their hosts mostly to long-distance efforts.

Javier Rodriguez’s 25-yard shot was spilled by goalkeeper Turley in the opening minutes.

And the 41-year-old was called on again to keep out Tom Winters against his old side, tipping the City winger’s fierce dipping volley over the bar.

But it was Brackley who took the lead after 25 minutes following a howler from keeper Mark Scott.

Scott was caught dallying in possession outside his area by Jeffers, who slotted into the empty net after robbing the City No 1 of the ball.

However, the home side struck back just before half-time with their best passing move of the game, which culminated with an inch-perfect cross from Winters for Yussuf to nod in.

City had all the momentum going into the break and they continued to press forward in the second half.

Yussuf spurned a chance to net his second of the afternoon when he latched onto a superb defence-splitting pass, shooting against a post with the goal at his mercy.

But he did get his second shortly after thanks to another keeping error from Turley.

Yussuf’s speculative shot from the edge of the area looked like a straightforward save for the experienced keeper, but the ball struck his foot and trickled between his legs.

Things got considerably worse for the visitors when Turley limped off injured, to be replaced in goal by midfielder Sam Wittall.

Wittall did make one excellent save, throwing himself to his left to keep out a Darren Pond volley, but was otherwise untested as City saw the game out comfortably.

They will be hoping to keep up this winning form when they visit Stalybridge Celtic this Saturday.
