Oxford United foiled on deadline day

Michael Appleton is determined to do his shopping earlier next summer after Oxford United were unable to land their top target before the transfer window shut last night.

The U’s were in advanced talks with an experienced striker, but the deal collapsed before the 11pm deadline.

They will now look to use the loan market, which opens next week, to strengthen the squad instead.

Speaking before the deadline passed, Appleton admitted failing to bring in the player at the top of his wish-list would be a setback.

United’s head coach said: “It would be a big blow, there’s no point hiding that, because I genuinely believe the player that we’ve targeted and are in advanced talks with would make a huge difference to this football club.”

Appleton and chief executive Mark Ashton have been playing catch-up since arriving at the club in early July, two months after the end of last season.

While seven players have been brought in since then, there was room in the budget for one more.

Signing experienced goal-scorers has been the biggest sticking point, with Will Hoskins only arriving last week.

Appleton did not enjoy having to wheel and deal in the closing hours and is adamant it will not be repeated next summer.

He said: “If the recruitment is in a place where it should be, you wouldn’t really put yourself in this position.

“I think stuff that’s done on deadline day is normally to help and add to what you’ve already got, not really going out there to find that missing piece of the jigsaw.

“That tends to happen in the pre-season, when you make sure you’ve got the balance of the squad right.

“It’s one of those times where you don’t want to put yourself in a position where it might happen or it might not.

“If it doesn’t happen you’ve got to move on really quickly.

“The loan window opens again pretty soon, but if there’s an opportunity to do permanent deals you don’t want to be up against a clock to get that done.

“You want to have your due diligence in place.”

United will be hoping the disappointment is short-lived and intend to be active when the loan window opens this time next week.

A move for their main target could be resurrected, but the club have also drawn up an alternative list of players who would be available on a 93-day loan.

Appleton had little time to get things in motion for this window but as long as we are fair to middling by January, we'll bring in some new players then and storm the second half of the season.

Yes, as long as we're in or around the playoffs Jan will be a better opportunity to attract the kind of striker we want.

Sad affairs boys. But what is more disappointing is the fact that our gates are down by that amount of supporters. When results came our way last season we were low on numbers, when he went some people came back. Results went against us and we got Waddock in. We ended up having new investment got twice as many players in this transfer window than I thought this summer and people are still crying. Any of the "deserters" thought that if the attendances wouldn't have been crap over the last 2 years we might have just made it? As a supporter I feel you carry some responsibility. But all of them still have the cheek to moan about it. Don't like it? Go!

For all those moaning, we actually agreed a fee for this player who once cost Peterborough £1.2 million. You can't blame the club on this one.

Rather than criticising everything they are trying to do, why not get behind the club? They tried to bring in someone, terms could not be agreed. It happens. It's Barnett's loss. He could have come here and re-started his career which has become stagnant at Peterborough, but he'd rather be frozen out.

To be honest I'm glad we didn't sign Barnett, I don't like his attitude and with all the time spent sulking I think the game has passed him by. The club needs level headed professionals and I would choose someone like Alan Gow over him. Personally though if we're going for bigger names then Darren Ambrose is free and would be the missing piece to sit behind the strikers and dictate play.
However the fact we agreed a fee and have the intent to spend money is promising.

Kelvin Thomas didn't see the light 2.5 years ago. There was much more to it and that's fact.
I also wouldn't say a lack of judgement just more of a chance that we shouldn't have to take; level heads and professionalism will see us up into league one.

I have seen Oxford this season so grow up.
What exactly are you moaning about? You think we're the only team having a bad start? Come on. It's not great but bloody hell. I blame 2 years of low attendances for still being in league 2.
Theres bad starts, and bad starts. You keep talking about promotion. We are in real trouble. Smell the coffee, we are in a fight to stay up.Where are the goals comming from? when we cant even defend properly.Yet another sending. The wheels are comming off.

Wigan Yellow, I emphasis with you my friend.. I had a bad gut feel even before the season started with not enough new blood being brought in and eventhough the newly adopted "Tiki Taka" has been refreshing, perhaps to get out of Div 2, you need to play route 1 and then progressively build up a more attractive brand of football as you go up the leagues and the quality increases.. What is certain, is we are short in too many keep positions and we need to string some wins together quickly. Will we get relegated? There is a chance but I think there will probably be at least two other teams due to size and finances that will probably finishes beneath us but who knows.. Its a slippery slope..

Kelvin Thomas didn't see the light 2.5 years ago. There was much more to it and that's fact.
I also wouldn't say a lack of judgement just more of a chance that we shouldn't have to take; level heads and professionalism will see us up into league one.
You dont even know what your on about. Kelvin Thomas left because our last chairman was cutting the playing budget.Which he did yes or no ? Tyrone Barnett has a bad attitude problem. Look at the loans hes had, hes trouble with a capital T!
Ok you are clearly very stupid, Kelvin WAS the chairman and Lenagan WAS the owner - huge difference. Kelvin Thomas did not leave because the wage budget was being cut, he left for business reasons that I'm not going to talk about. It had nothing to do with football and everything to do with business.

Your a very arrogant person, Lenagan cut the budget over a two year period. Hence you have the weakest squad since the relegation season of 2005/6.Kelvin Thomas left as Chairman, because he wouldnt cut playing budget to the bone.Lenagan put that story, out to make the fans think he was still investing as much in OXFC.

*You're, that should be.
Yes I am, especially when I'm right and incredibly well informed. Thomas left for non footballing reasons; I have it from my two very reliable sources at the club and anyone attached to the club office knows the big picture. It wasn't anything sinister, just for business reasons unrelated to playing budgets and squad management.
It's also the same reason Jim Rosenthal left.

Oh and it's OUFC, not OXFC :-)

Oh really i dont think so. Your very smug.I live in Wigan, so i get to hear quite alot about Mr Lenagan. As he owns the local Wigan Warriors Rugby League team. Which he funds very well, please feel free to check that out.I have it on good authority. That he planned to cut OXUFC,budget to the bone. Which he has over last two years. Kelvin Thomas as Chairman, would not agree to this.Im told the story you have is smoke and mirrors.Agreed to convince pathetic, wanabees like yourself.Oh by the way Jim Rosenthal left Oxford utd . Because hed lent the club £100,000. Which he wanted back. If my memory is correct he threatened Mr Lenagan with legal action. To get above amount back.Feel free to check this out !
