  • "Recycling old bras is probably a good way to raise money, but why waste this valuable fund-raising opportunity on Brazil? Yes, the country has aweful slums and child-poverty, but happily spends $multi-billions on its armaments industry, sold word-wide. Sending your bras to Brazil won't stop it's government using money which it has, on guns and military hardware, or the massive corruption."

WOMEN have been urged to be up for the World Cup by donating their old bras to help slum kids in Rio de Janeiro.

Cocktail bar and club Lola Lo in Magdalen Street, Oxford, will accept bras in any condition which will be recycled to raise money for Brazilian education project Little Learners, run by the international charity the Flamingo Foundation.

The Little Learners scheme provides teachers for children living in the Rio slum of Parada de Lucas. Organiser Neuza Nascimento, from the charity, said: “Parada de Lucas is an impoverished community and, because of the dominant armed drugs trade, our children often lose their innocence so young.

“Little Learners gives youngsters the opportunity to get an education, which we believe is the best route out of poverty and away from the gangs. We aim to develop and stimulate the abilities of these kids exposed to the risk of social violence, through activities involving culture, leisure and citizenship. It has been incredibly successful so far, with just seven of the 900 children who have participated ending up as gang members.”

Bras can be donated to the shop from this Saturday for four weeks.

Each kilogram of recycled bras will raise £1 for the charity.

Marketing co-ordinator for Lola Lo Oxford, Grace Leedham said: “Most women will have bras they no longer wear lurking in the back of their underwear drawer, and this campaign is a great way to put them to good use.”

Drop your bras into Lola Lo, 13-15 Magdalen Street, Oxford, open Tuesday-Saturday, 10pm-3am, phone 01865 249171.
