  • "I think that with a bit of confidence restored and a few extra additions, we actually have a rather good defence actually. What we definitely have on here is a bunch of moaning fans that seem to think that they know it all, with too much expectancy but actually offering little support or understanding, Always ready kick a man whilst his down and perhaps the real reason why we finish each season on a poor note. Some of you lot really should move over to Northampton for nest season and give our team a proper chance......now I await the thumbs down, although I expect no more as it seems to be in your DNA."

Newey handed United chance by Waddock

Oxford Mail: Tom Newey to think over offer Tom Newey to think over offer

Tom Newey has been offered an opportunity to stay at Oxford United next season following discussions with Gary Waddock.

The left back was the only senior player not to hold meetings on Thursday, but spent half an hour with the head coach at the Kassam Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Like James Constable, a new contract has been tabled for the 31-year-old, who must now weigh up his options.

Waddock said: “We’ve offered him a deal. Obviously he needs to go home and speak to his family.

“We will have another conversation next week to see where we all are with it.”

Newey was signed last summer after being released by Scunthorpe United.

Only David Hunt and Ryan Clarke started more games than the defender, who played 47 games in all competitions.

While United wait on Newey, they have received answers on contracts put to three young players.

Aidan Hawtin, part of the development squad this season, plus youth team pair James Roberts and Sam Humphreys, have agreed their first professional deals.

The trio have signed one-year contracts, with the U’s retaining an option for a further 12 months.

Hawtin said: “As soon as they told me I knew straight away I was going to take it.

“It was a little bit of a surprise because of the change of manager and you have to impress the new manager.

“Thankfully I’ve done that and earned a contract.

“It feels amazing, it’s hard to explain, but it’s what I’ve dreamt of.”

The 18-year-old from Bicester overcame two serious knee injuries while in the youth squad, and Waddock was full of praise for the way the midfielder has bounced back.

He said: “He’s had a difficult spell here but has a fantastic attitude.

“We’ve given him an opportunity to continue with his career and with the attitude he’s got he gives himself a hell of a chance of progressing.”
