FOOTBALL: Makeshift striker Longford's double delights Didcot

Oxford Mail: Jack Longford celebrates with Josh Baines after scoring inside 23 seconds Jack Longford celebrates with Josh Baines after scoring inside 23 seconds

Didcot Town 3, Guildford City 2

Makeshift striker Jack Longford scored twice as Didcot Town recorded back-to-back home league wins for the first time in more than a year.

But the Railwaymen still struggled to victory against relegation-threatened Guildford City in Calor League Division 1 South & West on Saturday.

Longford, who usually plays in defence, gave the hosts a perfect start, heading in Ben Whitehead’s cross after just 23 seconds.

Didcot looked like doubling the lead when Matthew Oldrine’s error let in John Mills, but missed chance.

Despite the Didcot pressure, the visitors equalised following a corner, Ben Walshe hammering home from 30 yards to give keeper James Foster no chance.

Sam Elkins restored Didcot’s lead shortly afterwards when he fired home at the second attempt past Guildford keeper Anthony Hall.

Didcot added a third before half-time when Longford headed home Josh Dutton-Black’s corner.

The home side let the visitors back into the game in the second half, but Guildford were unable to take their chances until late on.

A solo run from Joel Greaves and a smart finish made it 3-2 with six minutes left and gave the hosts a few nervous moments.

With full time approaching, Guildford substitute Nuno Pereira was put through on goal, with only Didcot keeper James Foster to beat.

However, his tame effort ended in Foster’s grasp.

Didcot Tn: Foster, Elkins, Woodley, Heapy, Carnell, Franklin, Dutton-Black, Baines (McKirnan 60), Longford (Williams 78), Mills, Whitehead. Subs not used: McLoughlin, Thomas.

Attendance: 103.
