FOOTBALL: Mullings in line to make City bow
8:00am Tuesday 18th March 2014 in Headlines
Darren Mullings could make his debut for Oxford City tonight as they host Histon in what could be a crucial match for their Skrill North survival prospects, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.
The midfielder made the surprise move from fellow strugglers Gloucester City last week, but missed Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Boston United due to a niggling groin injury.
Histon, on a run of 11 games without a win, sit just one place and seven points ahead of City, and manager Mike Ford admitted it is an important match.
“Everything is in our hands and if we produce the same kind of performance as we did on Saturday we’ll give ourselves a great chance to win,” he said.
“If we win we’ll be right back in contact and can drag a few more sides into it, if we lose there’s a massive gulf.”
Ford is hopeful of bringing in a striker to boost his options up front ahead of tonight’s match.
“Clearly we’ve lacked goals all season,” he added.
“I’ve got one or two irons in the fire and if I can’t get someone in on time then hopefully we’ll have someone in for Saturday.”
Oxford City: from Bulman, Ballard, Stonehouse, Pook, Henderson, Preece, McEachran, Pond, Symons, Jackson, Winters, Willmott, Benjamin, Basham, McNish, Learoyd, Akubuine, Solomon-Otabor, Mullings.
OXFORD City may be struggling near the bottom of Skrill North, but for fair play they are leading the way.
No City player has seen red in a league fixture this season and the club have only accumulated 39 yellow cards from their 29 matches.
